Facts About Dargens p2p

Facts About Dargens p2p

First of all I'll explain how ANt p2p works (notes taken from notes on MUTE a very similar network). Then I'll explain some of the differences between ANts p2p and Dargens p2p.

How ANts p2p Routes Messages

In a network, we have messages that need to travel from a sender to a recipient. Since ANts p2p users are anonymous, none of the nodes in the network know exactly where to find a particular recipient (or, more precisely, which computer a particular recipient is using). Like ants that are unaware of the overall environment layout, ANts p2p messages must be directed through the network using only local clues.

Each ANts p2p node maintains connections to several "neighbors" in the network, and these neighboring connections are used for message passing. Suppose that ANts p2p node X receives a message from Alice to Bob through node Y, one of its neighbors. X may have no information clues about where Bob is in the network. However, upon receiving this message, node X learns something about Alice: it learns that messages from Alice come through node Y. In the future, if node X ever receives a message to Alice, it can send it back through node Y using this clue.

Regardless of what X learns about Alice, it still has no information about Bob. The best strategy here, using ants as inspiration, is to "send ants in all directions", or to send a copy of the message on to each one of X's neighbors (what we will call "broadcasting" the message). One of the neighbors may have more information about which direction Bob is in. If none of the nodes in the network have clues about Bob's location, they will all broadcast the message to their neighbors. If Bob exists in the network, this technique will eventually find him.

Notice that throughout the search for Bob, the message has been leaving a trail of clues about Alice. If the message reaches Bob, and then Bob sends back a response, the response can follow these clues on a rather direct path back to Alice.

As the response is routed to Alice, it leaves a trail of clues that can be used to route future messages from Alice back to Bob. Other nodes can make use of these clues too. For example, if the owner of node X sends a message to Bob, the message will travel on a rather direct route using the existing clues.

We can see that ANts p2p's routing mechanism is quite similar to the technique of "Painting Arrows in the Forest". Each node can be thought of as a tree, and each neighbor connection can be thought of as a path between neighboring trees. Each node maintains a collection of arrows, and each arrow says something like "To get to Bob, use this path." In these diagrams, we follow the blue arrows backward to find Bob.

We can also think of each message leaving a "scent" as it travels through the network. Messages from Alice leave Alice's scent, and we can follow this scent when sending messages to Alice. The darker arrows in these diagrams represent messages, while the faded arrows can be thought of as the scent left by messages.

Routing Clues and Privacy

In terms of anonymity, the notion of "clues about Alice" sounds scary. Keep in mind that all of these "clues" are just local hints that will not enable anyone to directly pinpoint Alice in the network. A node's routing clue essentially tells it, "my neighbor knows more about Alice than I do." Of course, none of the nodes have a good measure of how much they know about Alice, so the fact that a particular neighbor knows more gives a node little extra information. For example, none of the nodes along a path between Alice and Bob know enough to conclude that "my neighbor is Alice."
Additionally Ants Features
  • Open Source Java implementation (GNU-GPL license)
  • Multiple sources download
  • Swarming from partial files
  • Automatic resume and sources research over the net
  • Search by hash, string and structured query

  • IRC embeded chat system
  • Full text search of indexed documents (pdf, html, txt, doc etc) -> QUERY REFERENCE.
  • Distributed/Decentralized Search engine
  • HTTP tunneling
  • ANts allow P2P communications through any kind of HTTP Proxy
  • ANts allow P2P communications through any kind of NAT or traffic filtering system

ANts vs Dargens

Users join ANts by boot-strapping from irc this results in a network with a random topology. Although this has the a short path length between any two nodes it is very difficult to find that path even with DHT so it does not scale well.

Dargens p2p (kerjodando) is based on ANts p2p except users join the network by connecting to either their friends or users that they share an interest with. This is a social network, a type of small world network. This also has a short path between peers but this path is much easier to find either with DHT, greeedy routing or ANt routing.

So Dargens p2p scales far better than ANts and is much faster.

To allow users to connect and form social networks, the Dargens tracker maintains a record of users' friends, that it shares with new users who connect.

Although the network information is kept on the site no information about who is sharing what files is kept on the site of communicated directly with any outside party by ANts.

As the system is web based it is very easy to configure.

There are several different level of security available.

Security Example

A user could be either public (general public can connect to him) or private (only invited friends can connect).

Uses can also publish files to the website in much the same way as done with bit torrent on a tracker.

The biggest drawback of the system is ANts because it uses Java which confuses many inexperienced web users.

Also it can take up to 2 minutes to download the client and connect even on fast dsl/cable networks.

Goals of Dargens

The aim of the system is to spread information to those who find it difficult to access information freely.

It has been designed (STUNT and SSL spoofing) to penetrate national censorship system such as the great fire wall of China.

However, it is not meant to circumvent national laws but to give privacy to responsible adult users which is a right we take for granted in the physical world but which is diminishing in the virtual world.

Sorry for my poor communication in the past but I suffer from a mild form of Aspergers Syndrome which affects every part of my life.

I am a lot more social than I use to be.

BTW it would be good to hear from any other sufferers.

We are all connected, if not directly then via friends of friends of friends etc. It has been prooved both theoretically and experimentally that everyone in Europe and North America are connected by a maximum of six steps.

This is how Dargens p2p works all nodes are connected but not randomly. They are connected like a social network a society. So path lengths are short and everybody can download and upload from everybody else.

And as it is ANts p2p (only change is network topology) it is anonymous.

And as to the single point of failure. I agree there is a single point of failure but it is open source (including the website) so it is like bit torrent. Sure they can kill a few trackers but they will never kill them all.

Lastly by being web based allows the featured files to be quality checked. So now you can download quality files anonymously. Of course you still have the ability to search and download like limwire etc again anonymously.

Nothing is 100% anonymous; this is safe enough to prevent snoopers from knowing what you're downloading without slowing downloads.

Go on download a file.

Test Anonymous Network for New Unsigned bands

New URL www.Dargens.com

Now has STUNT working firewall tunnelling and Upnp.

Sorry still only windows - working on mac and Linux compatibility.

Need folks to help testing.

A long way from finishing but making good steady progress.

Developer will be working full time from 8th October 2007.

Also, issue that JRE 1.60_02 and JRE 1.60_3 only work when jar is first downloaded.

JRE 1.60_01 and previous JRE versions work perfectly.

New Version of ANts p2p Being Worked On

What is currently being done.

I am developing a better version of ANts p2p.

However, I have the following issues:

  • I have zero testers - not a problem now but will stop development of improved client as work continues.
  • The content layer (www.itsDargens.com) has no users - this is a problem as means can't test website. The reason for content layer is to make ANts P2P more user friendly and cure two issues:
    • As network gets bigger download speed slows to zero. The reason for the slowing is that peers join the network randomly. So you get very long difficult to find paths. Solved by allowing users to join network (via content layer) near to content they are interested. Still one big network as one peer (user) can be in more than one (meetup/swarm/network). Jon Kleinberg has proved mathematically that it works. Downside some loss of anonymity for public meetups(swarms/networks) but upside is bigger total networks leading to more anonymity.
    • Most users just want to get content - research suggest that nearly 100% of content on p2p networks comes from 7% of users. So content layer caters for those 93% of users by making it apparent what content is available (only interests are listed not files for legal reasons).
  • I have taught myself both Ruby on Rails (I now use this at work on a daily basis) and Java. I also have a developer in China, Vicent, who is a student and working on the project in return for minimal expenses (not much money**) and kudos. However, I need more developers helping. If I can teach myself to code so can others! The situation is not helped by the lack of source code and DOCUMENTATION.
  • I work full time for a charity and have very little money or time so the project is moving at a snails pace. I need more help.
CAN YOU HELP?

**I pay Vicent as he is in China and even a Dollar in China is big money. It is OK for us in the rich west to demand that people volunteer to work on open source project for free but we have got everything we are RICH. In the developing world to ask someone to work for free would be exploitation. The money that I pay Vicent gives him some hope for the future, covers his expenses and shows that I understand the difficulties he has in China.

He also gains by developing an understanding of the West. For example although he can speak English (China is on the way to becoming the biggest English speaking country in the world) he had no idea what Christmas really was (and I did not understand the true significance of Chinese New Year). So we are both learning.

itsDargens.com Person to Person Download Service Back Online

ItsDargens.com is back online.

Looking to have new look and feel up by end of Tuesday Chinese time.

Then sort out bugs and get working Beta by end of week.

Aim of the site is to allow people to download files from their old or new friends person to person rather than via internet.

This will make transfers quicker and more private.

The site will also list groups of people and the type of files they are sharing in both a public and private searchable index.

Issues Found During Test

I've just been trying kerjodando p2p at a few Internet cafés and I found these three issues:

1) When you click the " click here to start kerjodando: start " (on the test itsDargens.com page ) it gave an error. To get it to work I had to do "save as" and then open downloaded file.

2) Once the client was open it took a long time to connect so in the end I did "Connect to Neighbour address" in advance mode.

3) Dargens did not check that I had the latest version of Java installed.

Once I connected I could download MP3s and videos faster than bit torrent.

Hope these hints are helpful to alpha testers.

Dargens F2F P2P Social Network File Sharing Site Now Up for Alpha Testing

I would like to invite you to help me develop a new website.

It really look horrible at the moment but we are working on this.

Hopefully, this ugly version works.

Help me test just have a go for a couple of hours.

Click on link below:

http://www.itsdargens.com/swarm/show_one/66e9b69841ab84096cd197c88419cec3

Then

"click here to start kerjodando: Start " on page.

ITS A BIT LIKE BIT TORRENT.

This is the first open test so probable won't work - please feel free to send feedback.

Happy New Year.

Look and Feel Disappointment

Just got the first draft of look and feel from "web designer". Very disappointed. Further drafts can only be an improvement.

Sunday, October 08, 2006

"Make a Swarm" and "Login" Pages Added to kerjodando Wireframe

Two new sections added to kerjodando p2p (better cos its private) wireframe:

Make a swarm:

1.What type of swarm is this: audio (like submit advert on craigslist)
2.What type of swarm is this: rock/indie (like submit advert on craigslist)
3.Swarm Information Form: (like submit advert on craigslist)
4.Example of a page for a swarm

Login:

1.Login page
2.MySwarms - saved bookmarked Swarms
3.Connect to selected swarms (connecting to more than one swarm at a time so spanning many swarms and thus creating a small world network.)

The wire frame helps the web designer to create the site. It shows the site logic NOT look and feel or layout.

Free Media Sharing over Public Networks

I am more determined to get kerkjodando p2p working quickly after reading Michael Rogers inspiring research note,
Censorship Resistant Communication over Public Networks.

This paper in preparation for his thesis later this year covers the following:

The rapid growth of peer-to-peer metworks and social networking websites has demonstrated the internet's potential as a medium for grassroots collaboration.

The research note describes ongoing research into the use of friend-to-friend overlay networks for censorship-resistant communication.

Decentralised mechanisms for resource allocation, unforgetable acknowledgments and adaptive routing are proposed.

I found the following interesting:

1) Intellectual property law:
makes sharing your favourite musc a revolutionary act.
It censors communication preventing the free flow of ideas.
How can you describe a Hendrix guitar rift without copying it?

2)Media is the message:
TV is passive, attentive and absorbing.
A friend-to-friend network's mode of interaction is social, collaborative and collusive.

3)It is possible to share media over a public network:
such as the internet without being censored by big business or governments by using a friend-to-friend overlay network (ANts p2p,kerjodandop2p or Freenet).

4)Tragedy of the commons:
These networks are under threat from powerful and well funded adversarys and from the selfish behaviour of the users themselves.
Friend-to-friend networks are constucted around social networks and so are "small world".

Swarms co-operate by reciprocation - users stay in a swarm so long as other users provide downloads and proxy bandwidth in return for them providing media and proxy bandwidth.
This avoids the "tragedy of the commons".

The aim of kerjodando website is to provide a meeting place for such swarms to form.

Java Made Easy

I thought I'd explain some of the coding that has been done to mod ANtsp2p. Have a look even if you don't program as it is written in java so it is easy to understand. Check out this tutorial if you fancy a crack yourself.

Antsp2pManager.java

Code to update ipfilter, settings and trusted peers files by reloading them from online directory shared by swarm users.

public class Antsp2pManager
{
public void updateIpfilter()
{
InetAddressWatchdog.getInstance().loadFilterFile("ipfilter.dat");
}
public void updateSettings()
{
FrameAnt.getInstance("").getGuiAnt().getSettingsAntPanel().loadStaticSettings(); FrameAnt.getInstance("").getGuiAnt().getSettingsAntPanel().updatesettingsUI();
}
public void updateTrustip()
{
InetAddressEngine.loadTrustedPeers(); FrameAnt.getInstance("").getGuiAnt().getConnectionAntPanel().updatetrustedpeersUI();
}
}

Common.java

Get the names of the files to update and their location.

InternetFile.java

/**
* A class that will get a file from a web or ftp server.
*
* You may use this code as you wish, just don't pretend
* that you wrote it yourself, and don't hold me liable for
* anything that it does or doesn't do. If you're feeling
* especially honest, please include a link to nsftools.com
* along with the code.
*
* For updates and more information, please visit
* www.nsftools.com
*
* @author Julian Robichaux
* @version 0.9
*/

Main.java

Starts kerjodando p2p by lauching ANts p2p and code to share ipfilter.dat (swarm).

Messages.java

Load kerjodando resource message bundle.

getfile.java

Save settings as files.

messages.properties

State names of files to updload.

runThread.java

Extend logger to to report on new code.

Do Your Own kerjodando Alpha Test

To test the part of kerjodando that shares ipfilter.dat between swarm members do the following:

1. Write a ipfilter.dat list to exclude all ip addresses except of those users you want to directly connect to see this article for instructions (only list ip addressses you want to exclude).

2. Save file to a url e.g. www.kerjodando.com/desperate_house_wives/

3. Run Java server script to launch kerjodano with url as server in parameter. script located at http://221.130.4.100:8080/swm/Dev-test/kerjodando.jnlp so complete link to launch kerjodando and use ipfilter.dat file located at url is:

http://221.130.4.100:8080/swm/Dev-test/kerjodando.jnlp?server=http://www.kerjodando.com/desperate_house_wives/

4. Accept all java webstart questions to start kerjodando client (same as Ants p2p client).

5. Use right click request connection in irc channel to connect to friends per ipfilter.dat.

6. You now can download from your swarm.

7. Email me feedback please or your details to join alpha testers.
