Audio Galaxy

1. Testing has stopped on TCP NAT traversal due to Casper having to move City. Looking to re-start soon. A real pity as we were very close to completing project. C'est la vie - Suppose there is more to life than hacking code.

2. Web Gui to have three parts:

  • Search form (done)
  • Search results page and link to queue item for download (partly done)
  • Download queue page with progress indicator and link to open downloaded file
As Vincent has quit the project due to lack of free time I am looking for a new person to do this.

3. The completed kerjodando p2p will closely resemble the old Audiogalaxy website:
  • Web based interface
  • Queue files for later delivery and
  • Full parsing of mp3 meta data.

Firewall Tunnelling and Quicker User Connection

Tne next project is ensure that users connect quickly and easily to kerjodando. It has two parts:

1. Ensure that users connect quickly and easily to trusted peers ONLY (except for users using Upnp to connect to other LAN users)

Currently "Ants" has several methods of connecting these need to be removed leaving only trusted peers and Upnp.

There might be more than this but here are the methods I know:

  1. irc - REMOVED
  2. gwebcache - REMOVED
  3. peers - previous connections - LEAVE
  4. random walk across the network from peer to peer recording peers with free slots - TO BE REMOVED
  5. manual connect in advance tab - LEAVE
  6. trusted peers - IMPROVE SO THAT IT KEEPS TRYING UNTIL CONNECTION MADE WITHOUT ANY BANDWIDTH TESTING
  7. Upnp - LEAVE
This is important as with fewer users in each group quick connection is very important.

2. Using the itsDargens website as an intermediary develop a simple process to allow two peers with un-forwarded ports to connect.

I must admit that I don't fully understand the TCP/IP protocol but I would prefer if the solution involved a client connecting to website and then the website updating the trusted peers file to reflect the external port that was used. (This could be total rubbish on my part) The solution must be SIMPLE.

This is important as with fewer users in each group quick connection is very important and there is a high probability that both users may not have kerj ports forwarded.

Both jobs are urgent as the point of the application is to CONNECT and DOWNLOAD and currently about 50% of users can't connect!

The full list of things added and removed are:

Needed:
Own folder, separate from Ants - JAVA - OUTSTANDING
Client minimize to systems tray on opening - JAVA- OUTSTANDING
try to connect to trusted peers - JAVA- OUTSTANDING
itsdargens itermediate connection help where two users behind a firewall - RAILS - OUTSTANDING
ipfilter.dat - RAILS - OUTSTANDING

Not Needed:

Browser location setting no longer needed - JAVA - DONE
Monitor clip board for ed2k and ants links - JAVA - DONE
Random walk for new peers with free slots (must use trusted peers) - JAVA - OUTSTANDING

You Can Use Any Port on ANts p2p version 2 (kerjodando)

The development team has just added a new option to use any port to connect to Ants p2p (kerjodando) YUM YUM!

See http://www.itsdargens.com/swarm/show_one/86d1cca8104f981648eb1b1d0f0f3a39

If you don't put a port then 443 is used.

443 is still the recommended port as it allows people behind firewalls to connect easily.

Please try it we need some feedback.

Daily Updates of ANts p2p ver2 (kerjodando)

I am going to start publishing daily updates of ANts p2p version 2 (kerjodando) daily just as Gwren use to do now I've solved the signing problem.

The proposed versions are:
0.10 Current
0.11 Lastest source code as published by Gwren
0.12 Relaxing of restriction on speed of connections (so cable users will be able to connect to slower connections)
0.13 Relax bandwidth limits - so that more bandwidth can be used to download
0.14 Add extra connection types
0.15 Reduce the amount of bandwidth used for searches and super peers

0.20 Replace java GUI with a web browser GUI

0.30 Significantly reduce the size of the ANts p2p version 2 client (kerjodando)

0.40 Add email invites to allow users to invite their friend to their network

0.50 Significantly reduce the time taken to connect to the network

0.60 Launch personal file sharing networks (3rd phase); file sharing meetup places (2nd phase) and anonymous torrents (1st phase)

All the above are subject to change.

New Guide for Anonymous P2P

Quick

1.Goto www.itsdargens.com

2.Select a meetup

3.Click on start

4.Download kerjodando p2p client (click RUN)

5.Connect to other users

6.Search download enjoy

How do I start?

You'll need a computer with a fast internet connection and the latest version of Java, available free from here.

Then visit www.itsdargens.com and start downloading.

Check out the kerjodando Downloading Guide for more details.

Detailed

With kerjodando you can download and enjoy public domain and user created movies, TV shows, music videos, games and more. Here’s how:

You do not initially need to download the kerjodando client.

When you go to download a public domain and user created movie or TV show, you will be given the opportunity to automatically download and install the client then.

You will need the latest version of Sun's Java RE software to run kerjodando available from here (most computers already have this installed).

kerjodando works with Windows, Mac, and Linux.

1. Goto www.itsdargens.com (or some other Ant torrent indexing site) and click on image in TV or search for interesting networks (meetups).

No need to register or login.

However, creating an account will allow you to join more than two meetups (term used for mini network of friends) and to bookmark any intersting meetups that you find.

Find a cool meetup to join.

In this example, let's join an Indie rock and pop music meetup.

2. Click on start link on meetup page.

3. Wait while Java loads (10 seconds).

4.Wait while the kerjodando p2p client for that meetup downloads (1minute).

5.Click on RUN (wait about 30 seconds for p2p client to start).

6.Select language and OK.

7.Select Advance Mode and then OK.

8.To manually connect fill in "connect to neighbours" address and port from trusted peers and then click connect.

9.When connected (about 2 minutes to connect and 5 minutes to connect to super nodes) click on search tab.

10.Search, use search terms such as a*, mp3*, avi* or pdf* to get an idea of what is available for download.

11.Select a search result and right click and select download from sub-menu to download item.

That’s it!

Keep in mind that a number of the steps in this guide assume you have never downloaded anything before from a kerjodando meetup.

Once you are set up, it is normally just a matter of finding something, downloading, opening and enjoying it.

Also see Ants p2p guide for extra information.

How to Make Ants P2P Scalable (Bigger)

Often Ants users have said, "It would be nice to have the option to be able to connect to both the general ants and your variation simultaneously. This way we don't dilute the ants between two separate networks."

I agree that it would be nice to connect to the general Ants network and the "Ants network Mod" at the same time.

However, this would defeat to objective which is to make it possible for ANts to have networks bigger than 60.

When 60 users connect together in ANts, the average path lengths become very long and so uploads and downloads grind to a HALT.

Jon Kleinberg has proved why this happens. It is due to the fact that although large random networks have very short path lengths they CANNOT be navigated (one user cannot find a path to a next user).

Jon Kleinberg has also proved that small world networks have short path lengths and ALSO can be navigated.

So if ANts was a small world network rather than a random network it would scale beyond 60.

So how do you make a small world network?

With great difficulty except for the fact that humans generally form small world networks in their social interactions.

Hence, kerjodando and itsDargens.com, people join ANts network according to their interests or friendships. And as each user can be a member of 2 meetups (swarms) then ONE LARGE NETWORK is formed with short path lengths between most users and long path lengths between a minority of users, a small world network.

Then the ANts network is scalable, it can grow to as big as any other 2nd en network without reducing the upload and download speed of users.

See:

Only Small World P2P Network Navigation (Search) Scalable

Only small world networks are scalable i.e. can grow in size without becoming very inefficient.

A small world network, where nodes represent people and edges connect people that know each other, captures the small world phenomenon of strangers being linked by a mutual acquaintance.

The small world phenomenon (also known as the small world effect) is the hypothesis that everyone in the world can be reached through a short chain of social acquaintances. The concept gave rise to the famous phrase six degrees of separation after a 1967 small world experiment by social psychologist Stanley Milgram which suggested that two random US citizens were connected on average by a chain of six acquaintances.

This has far reaching consequences for 'anonymous' P2P file sharing. A leading researcher on small world networks, Jon Kleinberg, states the following:

Moreover, α=2 is the only exponent at which any decentralized algorithm can achieve a delivery time bounded by any polynomial in logN: for every other exponent, an asymptotically much larger delivery time is required, regardless of the algorithm employed.

Jon Kleinberg
http://www.cs.cornell.edu/home/kleinber/nat00.pdf

Lets take this phrase by phrase to see what does this actually mean for anonymous file sharing clients like ANts P2P, MUTE and Freenet.

  • α=2 is the only exponent at which any decentralized algorithm can achieve a delivery time bounded by any polynomial in logN.

  • logN refers to the width of a network.

  • As the number of users (N) increases, the average number of hops between any two users, the width, increases by a factor of logN.

  • However, it is expected delivery time (T) for messages sent between users that is important for file sharing.

  • T increases by a factor of logN only for small world networks (α=2). For other networks T is very much larger.

  • T for a ad-hoc overlay p2p net (like ANts, MUTE or Freenet) is the number of users a file or query has to be forwarded via to reach its destination, the path length (L).

  • For a small network the path length is small so that a workable amount of bandwidth in total is used in uploading and downloading for each hop along path length.

  • For a large network L is far too large unless the network is small world although ironically the width of the network still scales by logN.
  • for every other exponent, an asymptotically much larger delivery time is required, regardless of the algorithm employed.

  • So you can come up with whatever clever message routing method you like, it will not scale unless it is small world.

  • It is the network structure, the topology not the routing algorithm that determines if a network scales.

  • So neither ANts P2P or MUTE will scale by improving routing algorithms while they remain networks with a random topology(structure).

  • However, Iain Clark of Freenet seems to have already made this break through and has redesigned Freenet 0.7 to be small world.

I have decided to do the same for ANts p2p file sharing by making a very simple mod that will force the network to be small world.

kerjodando, the name of my ANts p2p mod, will force users to connect to only friends or others that share a similar interest to themselves, a p2p small world social network.

I call these groups, swarms and they are controlled, like bit torrent, by a simple tracker. Users can be members of many swarms covering all their interests and social networks. Swarms can either be private (invitation only) or public.

In this way kerjodando will be more scalable and be able to grow much bigger.

I hope this make sense.

But as you can see ANts has to change if is going to get bigger rather than gradually die.

Beta Testing of New Ants P2P File Sharing Mod - Your Help is Needed [Urgent]

Sorry to ask but please could you help me to test the new mod of ANts p2p (kerjodando).

Would you also pass this post on to anyone who can help in testing.

To focus the testing it is BEST if everyone uses this meetup (swarm):

http://www.itsdargens.com/swarm/show_one/6ad9b233a173d19782cd03ac4b175fe6

Click on Start to launch the modded ANts p2p client (kerjodando).

Bug fixes to the itsDargens.com (ANts content layer) website are currently been worked on.

Also, an new USER FRIENDLY GUI for ANts p2p II that will be web based.

Please let me know your ideas.

I also need people to help me with the admin of a new sourceforge project site for:

  • ANts p2p II
  • kerjodando ipfilter.dat sharing and
  • itsDargens.com content layer for anonymous p2p
So please email me if you can help.

Feb 2007 Pizza On Rails

PizzaOnRails

Went to Pizza on Rails last night. Very good met loads of interesting people working on loads of interesting project some of which weren't covered by NDAs so could be discussed. More motivated than ever now. see www.pizzaonrails.com.

We're Going Cuckoo About Look of Site

Still have not got the look and feel as we want it. Trine has been pulling her hair out - we are aiming to launch a beta 15th Feb 2007 so we are running out of time. P2P F2F file sharing is complex enough without a poor website.

Issues Found During Test

I've just been trying kerjodando p2p at a few Internet cafés and I found these three issues:

1) When you click the " click here to start kerjodando: start " (on the test itsDargens.com page ) it gave an error. To get it to work I had to do "save as" and then open downloaded file.

2) Once the client was open it took a long time to connect so in the end I did "Connect to Neighbour address" in advance mode.

3) Dargens did not check that I had the latest version of Java installed.

Once I connected I could download MP3s and videos faster than bit torrent.

Hope these hints are helpful to alpha testers.

Dargens F2F P2P Social Network File Sharing Site Now Up for Alpha Testing

I would like to invite you to help me develop a new website.

It really look horrible at the moment but we are working on this.

Hopefully, this ugly version works.

Help me test just have a go for a couple of hours.

Click on link below:

http://www.itsdargens.com/swarm/show_one/66e9b69841ab84096cd197c88419cec3

Then

"click here to start kerjodando: Start " on page.

ITS A BIT LIKE BIT TORRENT.

This is the first open test so probable won't work - please feel free to send feedback.

Happy New Year.

Making Some Progress Towards Ruby on Rails Beta Website

The developer Vicent said by email yesterday that,

All the functions have been finished, EXCEPT that:

1.Validation the input
2.Error process
3.Look and feel not in place so site is very ugly
4.RSS feed
5.Ajax(user register,user login)

So please don't pay attention to the ugly page, only look at the functions.

and there are two items in one page(list swarms)

here is the url:
http://211.103.102.214/index/index
To test this page as it is p2p I need alpha testers.

If you can help please email me on ezzy.elliott@gmail.com .

2nd Draft of Look and Feel Still Disappoints

Still not remotely what we asked for but neater and more airy.
